The Apothecary

A fixer with no birth record, no face, and no territory. Routes work into Grimshaw's peripheral network, and has never once delivered a contract larger than what the client ordered.

Overview

Nobody has confirmed an identity. The Apothecary surfaced on encrypted channels years ago brokering small jobs — clean, modest, carefully measured — and the jobs got bigger while the measurements did not change.

They are one of very few fixers trusted to route work into Grimshaw's peripheral teams, which is a position of some consequence: it means the company lets them decide who does not exist this week.

The professional philosophy, quoted secondhand:

"The dose makes the poison."

Any job, sized wrong, kills the client instead of the problem. The Apothecary sizes everything right.

Attributed operations

None confirmed. These are what the nodes have pattern-matched.

  • The Soft Close — twelve board members of a pharmaceutical concern slept through their own hostile takeover. Nobody entered the building. The alarm logs show one pizza delivery
  • Ashgate — an arcology block changed owners for the price of a single death, ruled natural causes. The coroner retired the following week
  • The Installment Plan — an eighteen-month campaign against a rival security firm: one loss per month, never the same kind twice, never enough at once to justify open war
  • The Tare — a cargo that officially never existed moved through a port that officially closed. The manifest weighed exactly nothing

Rumour

Unverified, contradictory, and periodically deleted at source.

  • Trained as a chemist. Or a pharmacist. Or an army medic. Or a corporate formulary auditor. Every version has a source; every source is a repost
  • Has never touched the product — only writes the prescription. No evidence exists of the Apothecary pulling a trigger, cracking a lock, or being in the room. Ever
  • Keeps a patient list of everyone they have ever routed a job to. Whether that is a favour ledger or a kill list is the nodes' favourite argument
  • Pays for the funerals of contractors who died on their jobs. Flowers, no card, always the same flowers — a species nobody has managed to identify
  • Is not one person: a rotating identity run off Grimshaw's routing desk, or three retired partners sharing a brand
  • Someone once claimed to have met them face to face. The description contradicted every prior claim — which either disproves the rumour or proves the point
  • Deals only in escrow, through a dead-drop bank that predates the apogee wars — which would make it older than the Concord itself, and answerable to nobody who currently exists

Personality

  • Measured to the point of principle. "The dose makes the poison." A job sized wrong kills the client instead of the problem, and they have never once delivered a contract larger than what was ordered
  • Never in the room. No evidence exists of them pulling a trigger, cracking a lock, or being present. They write the prescription; somebody else takes it
  • Courteous in a way that reveals nothing. Years of encrypted channels and not one recorded lapse into a personal detail — every biography that circulates is a repost of another repost
  • Pays for the funerals. Flowers, no card, always the same unidentified species. It is the only thing they do that has no professional explanation

Relationships

  • Grimshaw Risk Partners — routes into their peripheral network; trusted to, which is rare
  • The crew — hired them for CTR-8EKN-Y2W2, supplied the badges, the glasses and the siphon device, and set the fifty-percent bonus for silence. See M3.231.640

Status

A voice on an encrypted channel, a set of jobs nobody can prove, and a standing account with a florist.
