The Kuiper

Thin, cold, mostly rock, and unfinished. Where the charts stop being reliable and then stop.

Spoken "the Kuiper", and shortened to the Kype by anyone who works it. Named for a surveyor nobody out there could identify.

Overview

Beyond the Outer Sphere the system does not end so much as thin out — a wide, sparse country of ice and rock and long orbits, with outposts at the end of supply lines nobody enjoys running. Populations are small, self-selecting, and a long way from correction, which makes this where local law and local faith both go their own way fastest.

It is also where the system's unfinished business sits. The apogee wars left material out here that nobody has catalogued, and there is a great deal of wreckage that has never been visited twice.

How it feels 👑❄️

A scatter of minor kingdoms. Outposts that were founded for a reason, outlived it, and became polities. Each one governs itself, none of them the same way, and nothing homogenises them — the distances are too great and the traffic too thin for anyone's habits to spread.

  • As diverse as anything gets. One holding is a hereditary monarchy, the next a stubborn commune, the next run by whoever holds the reactor. There is no Kuiper style
  • They do not mix. Neighbours are months apart. Two settlements can be a light-day apart and share nothing — not law, not calendar, not language habits, not gods
  • Every one is the centre of its own world, and treats the Inner Sphere as a rumour with opinions
  • Custom hardens fast out here. A practice three generations old is ancient and non-negotiable, and its origin as somebody's decision has been forgotten

The far edge is the same region. The Kype thins outward into the Oort without a border, and the difference between sparse and uncharted is a matter of how recently anyone looked.

Known places

  • Pluto GateAstraCore's edge-of-system relay, and the last piece of hard infrastructure before the charts thin. Every outbound transmission in the Sphere passes through its cone. Nobody has asked what it keeps
  • Graves' End — a dead first-wave colony ship
  • The Shoals — a ship-graveyard debris field
  • The Cairn — the Concord's war memorial, and its most sanitized archive
  • Last Anchor — the last permanent station before the charts fail
  • Last Light — the furthest charted human structure. Its logs note things that should not have been there
  • Pyre — a glass-cratered, war-scarred desert world. ⚠️ Were those craters natural?

Discovery

New bodies are logged every year. Almost all of them are nothing — a survey fee and a catalogue number. The exceptions are why anyone keeps looking, and why the corporations quietly fund expeditions they never announce.

Discovery is a mission type, not a fixed place. There is no map of the far side of the Kuiper because the map is the deliverable — and it ends where the system does. Nothing out here leads anywhere else.

Status

Thin, cold, and full of unfinished business. The only frontier the setting has left that money cannot simply buy.
