A communications monopoly that holds the free market as scripture without being religious about anything — and has its pockets in everybody, because everyone's traffic runs through it.

Overview

AstraCore owns data networks, communications, and AI-driven logistics: the layer every other business in the Sphere sits on top of. In a system where distance is a wall and messages behave like mail rather than conversation, whoever carries the traffic holds the only tool that shortens the wall. AstraCore carries the traffic.

The company was founded to preserve a cultural tradition, and the tradition is laissez-faire economics across the solar system. They hold that conviction with the force of doctrine and would object strenuously to the word. Their position is that they do not follow a religion; they simply have a set of principles that happens to be complete, self-consistent, and not open to revision.

This puts them at odds with the Harbingers, whose first tenet is also freedom — but personal freedom, for natural people. AstraCore's freedom is commercial. The two do not mesh, and both sides find the other's version faintly embarrassing.

Infrastructural vs. political power

AstraCore is a utility that decided to become a kingmaker. Cryovast Systems is the same kind of company making the opposite choice: everyone sleeps in Cryovast's pods and nobody thinks about them. That is the axis the secondary tier runs on, and AstraCore sits at the far political end of it.

Goals

  • Keep the market unregulated, which they experience as a moral position rather than a commercial one
  • Extend the platform — reach is the product
  • Keep Sebastian Oduya profitable, and drop him the day he stops being

Relationships

  • Sebastian Oduya — they platform him, and that platform is where his reach comes from. He is content, and content performs
  • The Harbingers of the Guide — a freedom they do not recognise as freedom
  • Pluto Gate — their edge-of-system relay, which hears all outbound traffic. Nobody has asked what it keeps
