Lumen Freight & Trade
The largest transport network in the Sphere. Lumen does not own the cargo — it owns when the cargo arrives, and in a system where a crossing takes months, that is the same thing as owning it.
Overview
Lumen runs the lanes. Bulk haulage, scheduled routes, port infrastructure, bonded warehousing, and the timetable that every other business plans against. Lumen Nexus is a port-world wrapped in orbital docks; Reliance is the logistics hub where everything transits and nothing stays; Terminus is the last fuel before nowhere; and Throat is a chokepoint station on the only safe lane between two systems, which is a sentence that describes the entire company.
The Sphere is one solar system with no shortcuts. Light takes minutes to an hour and ships take months, so nothing is reactive and everything is planned. A corporation does not buy transport from Lumen; it builds its year around Lumen's schedule and then discovers what its choices are.
Lumen therefore holds the least dramatic and most absolute power in the setting. It has never needed to refuse anyone. A route can simply be scheduled badly, and there is no appeal, no visible decision, and nobody to accuse.
Character

Where it stands on the Labour Question
Incumbent, and the most exposed one.
Freight is the textbook example of the work the Sphere admits it cannot do without — continuous, unglamorous, badly paid, and utterly unstoppable. Lumen runs on Instanced labour more heavily than any other secondary, and it is the corporation for which "the Sphere could not run a week without them" is a literal operational statement rather than a rhetorical one.
It defends the ban like an incumbent and lives in quiet terror of its own depreciation curve. Every Instanced Lumen loses is one it cannot replace, and the schedule it sells is built on a workforce that only ever gets smaller.
Relationships
- Meridian Holdings — the direct rival, and the temperamental opposite. Meridian moves before the analysis is finished; Lumen is the analysis. Both want the same chokepoints
- Cryovast Systems — Lumen carries the passengers, Cryovast keeps them unconscious. Neither business is viable without the other and neither has ever tried to absorb the other
- Erebus Mining Group — the largest single producer of mass, and permanently unhappy about its allocation
- Blackstar Finance — cargo underwriting. Between them they decide which routes are commercially real
- Drake Interstellar — where Lumen's retired hulls go to be broken, and occasionally to be sold again
Status
Immovable, unglamorous, and holding a workforce it cannot replace against a timetable it cannot slow down.
