Overview
The Cooperative split from Meridian Holdings generations ago over a difference in temperament: the parent company chased opportunity, and the founders wanted to chase knowledge.
The name is a scholar's joke about humility. A lacuna is the gap in a damaged manuscript — the missing passage, the thing the record does not say. The founders meant it as a statement of purpose: we exist to work on what is not yet known. It has been read that way for generations and nobody has ever found it sinister. What emerged was slower, quieter, and deeper. The Cooperative innovates by the book — fewer partnerships, fewer risks, longer timelines, and results its rivals cannot reproduce.
That caution has a cost. While competitors expanded into trade, logistics, and political leverage, the Cooperative stayed a research house with a research house's margins. The attempt to fix that ended with a coup.
