Blackstar Finance

Interplanetary banking, insurance, and the laundry. Blackstar's only real product is neutrality — and the price of selling neutrality to everyone is that it ends up knowing what actually happened.

Overview

Blackstar holds the accounts. Every corporation in the Sphere, every Concord department, most of the mercenary companies and a great many people who would prefer not to be listed anywhere all bank in the same institution, because there is nowhere else that will take all of them at once. Its capital is Meridian, a tidally-warm two-city world that is neutral ground by commercial necessity, and its vault is Ledger, the private station in orbit above it.

Blackstar has no side and cannot afford to acquire one. The moment it is seen to favour a major, the other two withdraw, and a bank that has lost its neutrality is just a very large building.

That constraint produces the setting's strangest institution: a corporation with no ambition beyond continuing to be trusted, which therefore never campaigns, never postures, and never takes a public position on anything — and which, precisely because everyone routes through it, has the clearest picture of the Sphere that exists.

The insurance is the honest version

The banking is the visible half. The half that matters is underwriting.

Marketing lies, the Feed frames, filings are drafted by people paid to draft them — but a claim has to be paid, and to pay it Blackstar has to establish what genuinely occurred. Its assessors go to the site. They interview crews who have no reason to protect the client. They price the risk of a route, a world, a contractor, a cargo.

A Blackstar loss file is the least dishonest document in the Sphere about any event it covers. Nobody wrote it to be read.

Character

  • Banking, insurance, and black-budget laundering — the last one is an open secret and structurally load-bearing
  • Neutral by necessity, which reads as integrity and is actually a business model
  • Quiet, courteous, and unbribable in the ordinary way — Blackstar cannot be bought without ceasing to be worth buying
  • Knows the real numbers on everyone, and sells access to none of them, because that is the same sale twice

Relationships

  • All three majors — clients, none of them favoured, all of them faintly uneasy about it
  • Erebus Mining Group — insures operations that should be uninsurable, at prices that say so out loud
  • Ironveil Security Solutions — Ironveil's whole pitch is that its work is insurable and an independent crew's is not. Blackstar's premiums are what make that pitch true
  • Lumen Freight & Trade — cargo underwriting; between them they decide which routes are commercially real
  • The Sworn Song — the laundry has customers, and Blackstar's position is that it does not ask

Status

Trusted by everyone, loved by nobody, and holding the only honest archive in the Sphere by pure accident of its business model.
