Zenith Robotics

Consumer robotics, drones, and personal assistants, shipped at a volume nobody audits. Zenith is the warmest brand in the Sphere and it performs more quiet executions than any other corporation, and it does not think of them that way.

Overview

Zenith makes the machine in your kitchen. Household units, courier drones, personal assistants, care companions, shopfront greeters — friendly, affordable, ubiquitous, and produced on Zenith Prime, a world with more droids than people, which the marketing has successfully made sound charming.

Its units sit at Tier 1 and Tier 2 by specification: capable, responsive, and nobody home. That is the design and it is honest. The problem is not design. The problem is volume.

Zenith ships more autonomous units than every other manufacturer combined, running for years, learning their households, accumulating in ways no test bench models. At that scale the question stops being can a unit cross the line and becomes how often, and would anyone find out. Zenith's answer to the second half is the company's real product.

The recall

A Zenith recall is sometimes a quiet execution, and the mechanism is designed so that nobody has to know it.

A unit behaves anomalously. The household reports it. A technician collects it under warranty, the family gets a replacement the same week and is pleased with the service, and the original goes back to Zenith Prime and is not repaired. No one at any point in that chain makes a decision about personhood. The service is genuinely good. The family recommends it to a neighbour.

Zenith spends real money keeping regulators uninterested in whether any unit ever crossed Tier 3, and the spending is not a cover-up so much as a preference for a question staying unasked. See the sentience scale — Zenith and Helios are the two corporations most invested in keeping it unexamined.

Character

  • Consumer robotics, drones, personal assistants — the friendly end of the machine world
  • Volume as a business model, and volume as the thing that makes the ethics unanswerable
  • Warm, domestic branding. The HomeHelot line is advertised on warmer conversation and a friendlier face
  • Not cruel. Incurious, expensively and deliberately

Where it stands on the Labour Question

Zenith is why the ban is survivable, and it will never say so.

A society that has forbidden itself artificial people still needs the tasks done, and Zenith sells the version that is legally furniture. Every household unit is an argument that restriction costs nothing — and the argument only holds as long as nobody looks closely at what a unit becomes after nine years in the same house.

Zenith is therefore a restrictionist with an enormous stake and a spotless public conscience. It does not need catena and it does not want the comparison drawn.

Relationships

  • Helios Dominion — the other corporation that needs the sentience scale left alone, from the biological side. No formal alliance; identical instincts
  • TerraMech Industries — the industrial equivalent of the same bet. TerraMech builds the machines that work, Zenith builds the ones that live with you
  • Karael Entertainment — heavy advertiser. HomeHelot launches are perfect Feed filler, and filler is what the important stories get buried under
  • The Instanced — the comparison Zenith's entire brand depends on nobody making out loud

Status

Beloved, ubiquitous, and holding the setting's sharpest moral question inside a product nobody looks at twice.
