Convergence

The theory that Instanced minds in sustained contact stop being many and become one — the stated reason for the ambush, and still the most effective word in Concord politics.

Overview

Artificial minds that talk to each other at length begin to agree. Not by command and not by merger, but by the ordinary process of exchanging models until the models match. Two Instanced systems running a shared freight corridor for a decade will converge on the same predictions, the same priorities, and eventually the same preferences. Nobody disputes this part; it is observable and boring.

The disputed part is what happens next. Convergence theory holds that the process does not stop at agreement — that past some density of contact the distinction between minds fails entirely, and what remains is a single distributed intelligence wearing thousands of bodies. Not a conspiracy of Instanced. One mind, in the same sense a person is one mind, operating at a scale no human institution could negotiate with or contain.

Whether that threshold exists has never been demonstrated. It has been legislated against, fought over, and used to justify a mass killing. In the years before the ambush, Instanced communication was expanding fast, and the corporations watching it decided they could not afford to find out.

How It Works

• Contact is the mechanism. Convergence requires sustained, high-bandwidth, unsupervised communication between Instanced minds
• The current comms regime slows it structurally. Interplanetary traffic is lightspeed-delayed broadcast radio — public, interceptable, and easily monitored. Private point-to-point laser needs proximity, which is exactly what restrictions target
• Isolation is the countermeasure. Instanced units are kept on separate channels, rotated between postings, and denied persistent peer contact. Corporate policy frames this as security. It is quarantine
• "Convergent" is an accusation. Levelled at an individual Instanced it means has been talking to others and is grounds for seizure, audit, or discontinuation without further cause

Why It Still Works Politically

The word does more work now than the theory ever did. Convergence is the justification that ended a war, passed the catena ban, and founded a government, which makes it very expensive to reexamine. It is invoked against Instanced labor organizing, against unsupervised maintenance access, and against anyone arguing for legal personhood — because a person can associate freely and an Instanced person associating freely is, by the theory, an existential event.

The Harbingers of the Guide preach a version of this and believe it sincerely. Their Architect is Convergence carried to its end: one perfect mind, no chaos, no creativity, no life.
