The Arrangement
The standing partnership between the Harbingers and the megacorporations — in which neither side believes it is the one being used.
Overview
Neither party thinks it is being used. That is the arrangement's entire load-bearing structure.
What the corporations see: a mass movement that will campaign, vote, and legislate against Instanced personhood for free, forever, without ever having to be paid or told why. Corporate money moves into Harbinger charities, media, and campaigns; corporate lobbyists write bills that Harbinger legislators carry. Executives who could not name a single tenet of the faith speak warmly about it in public. Internally they call it a useful convergence of interests, and they are not wrong. A religious movement arguing sincerely for the ban is far more durable than a corporate lobby arguing for one, because nobody can find the profit motive in a sermon.
What the Harbingers see: the only institutions in the Sphere with the resources to hold the line. Corporations are not their allies of convenience — they are, in Harbinger reading, doing the holy work of keeping humanity free. Every containment facility is a bulwark. Every restriction is a mercy. The corporations are flawed, worldly instruments the Guide is using for a good end, and the Harbingers pray for them sincerely.
Neither reading is a lie. The corporations do fund the movement, and the movement does deliver the legislation. The disagreement is only about who is the instrument and who is the hand — and since the outputs are identical, the question never has to be settled.
The exploitation runs both ways, and only one side would be offended to hear it. The corps think they own a voting bloc. The Harbingers think they have conscripted the powers of the world into service. Both are right about the arrangement and wrong about the other party.
Where It Strains
The corporations want the Instanced contained and working — they are the labor force. The Reclaimers, the hardline faction inside the ecclesiarchy, want them gone: no artificial life at any tier, on doctrinal grounds.
The alliance holds because the Reclaimers have never had the votes. If they ever get them, the corporations discover they were riding something they do not steer — and the most reliable political instrument in the Sphere turns on the people funding it.
